Hello? My name is Luis Diaz and I am going to tell you a little bit about the brand técui.
Técui is a nickname that I’ve had since secondary school, and in case you are wondering what that means, the origin of the word can be summarized like this:
Once upon a time there was this guy who’s brother started calling him ‘tecla’ (which in Spanish, it stands for piano key, for its skinny form). It eventually evolved into ‘Técui’; a friend from secondary school told me “you look like my cousin técui, so I am going to call you técui as well”. That’s the story, it is nothing exciting, but I like how it sounds … técui.

I was born Tijuana, México, in the mid 70’s, very close to the sea. My mother was –full time mom, and my father worked for a government company, which means that the people from México paid for my roof, my food and my school.
This led me to complete my social services in Chiapas at the end of my college career in graphic design in the late 90’s. I knew I would have a good time visiting all the sites of that state, what I did not know is that it would change my perspective on life, that it would awaken in me the need to work for good and just causes.

This experience led me to criticize many things of the World, México and the people. I began to see with more clarity the corruption and indifference of the government amongst other things.
I expressed this graphically and in art installations; I also spent significant time drawing rocks and sceneries.
After several years I got tired of criticizing and decided to take a different route which had the same goal: the intent of justice and well being for all. I accepted another style. This one was based in nature and I understood that the rock outlines were taking me to the same place but through a different route. It was a more laid back and less stressful road.

Out of the result of these drawings came out what I call ‘prayers’.
These ‘prayers’ are found all over the World and are formed with the energy of a place, a landscape, a rock, a waterfall, or simply, the rain. Everything in nature has and projects an energy that I decipher and draw in my own way. The region where I grew up at has taught me to draw it in a certain way thanks to its sea, its desert and its rocks.
That is how I began to draw ‘prayers’, the trees, landscapes and the rocks of this area were my inspiration.

Tijuana and its surroundings has its own language, they speak their own tongue. The forms that I draw would not exist without the nature if this area. I am conscious of this and this helps me create more.
This nature that also prays for itself and us.
I realized that this outline is a style that was born in Tijuana, by a tijuanense. In other words, it was a product of a human being and his land.

After several drawings many interesting personalities and figures came out. I began to synthesize objects with this style and attempted to take this style to clay.
After doing so, I observed how these ‘prayers’, traces & styles were left reflecting in the same way and I knew it was applicable to everything. I was somewhat scared.
I made an introspection to see what I wanted to achieve with this style. Maybe I was just looking for money and I would only end up transmitting negative things to the people, instead of helping, I would only cause harm. I started to analyze my life and I realized that although I am not perfect, I am nice person. With tears I realized that I have a good heart, the same as everyone, although due to my joking nature I feel I mock people and at times I end up offending them. Regardless, one thing does not eliminate the other and I am conscientious that I transmit my life and my being in what I do, just like a mirror.

This is how this self analysis has given me the confidence to continue drawing and producing without fear or regrets.
I have found the reason and purpose for these forms: before they were simple lines and rocks that I enjoyed drawing, now I find their time, space, essence and reason to show themselves before me.
I am conscientious that these pieces are not just mine, but also of Earth and the places that have influenced me. Nature draws its opinion while I walk in it, while I cross its paths, when I drink from its rivers. It makes me part of her, part of a whole … I reminds me that I am one with nature.
With much faith I have decided to make a company and produce material for t-shirts, children’s games, notebooks, etc. Apply the style as much as possible, since my intention is not only to pay the rent and buy tortillas, but to provoke deep thought and a smile, not just from the piece, but from themselves as well, the spectators.
I want people to understand and find the nature in them.
